Short Story

Did you know that a child dies every 37 seconds from a lack of clean water (UNICEF, 2019)?

Did you know that children under-five are on average more than 20 times more likely to die from unsafe, dirty water, and bad sanitation, than from a civil war or conflict (UNICEF, 2019)?

Did you know that children and women walk 2-4 hours to swamps and rivers to gather dirty water in containers that weigh over 35lbs (UNICEF, 2019)?

As a child growing in villages in northern and southern Cote d’Ivoire, West Africa, my siblings and  I walked long distances (roughly 3-6K) each day to fetch dirty water for my family. I witnessed firsthand the power of water to give life and to take life away. I have seen children dying from diarrhea and cholera because of the dirty water they drank. Instead of receiving gifts for my 42nd birthday, I am asking my relatives, students, friends, friends of my friends, colleagues, educators, and acquaintances to help me raise $4,200 by February 28, 2020. One hundred percent (100%) of your $4,200 raised will go towards the Drissavogo Village Water project which consists of providing clean water and healthy sanitation by August 31st, 2020. In Drissavogo village children, women, and men are drinking dirty water from a nearby swamp. People practice open defecation because of the lack of toilets or healthy latrines. and to help build a water tower in the village of Drissavogo, located in northern Cote d’Ivoire. Your donations will save hundreds of lives in Drissavogo village. I thank you in advance and encourage you to text the URL Link of my Birthday Pledge fundraiser to your friends, coworkers, and siblings, and post it on your Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other social media accounts.

I thank each of you in advance and may God bless you abundantly.
